Glucophage long

Active substance:

Metformin hydrochloride

Pharmachologic effect:

Glucophage Long is an oral antihyperglycemic drug used to control blood sugar levels. It works by decreasing glucose production in the liver, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization.

Indications:

• Type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in overweight patients, when dietary management and exercise alone do not result in adequate glycemic control.

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to metformin or any of the excipients
• Acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis
• Severe renal impairment
• Acute conditions with the potential to alter renal function
• Acute or chronic disease which may cause tissue hypoxia
• Hepatic insufficiency
• Alcoholism

Side effects:

In order of decreasing probability: Very common: Gastrointestinal disorders such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite, Common: Taste disturbance, Uncommon: Skin reactions such as erythema, pruritus, and urticaria, Rare: Lactic acidosis, Very rare: Decrease in vitamin B12 absorption

Dosing and Administration:

The recommended starting dose is 500 mg once daily with the evening meal. Dosage increases should be made in increments of 500 mg every 10-15 days, based on glycemic control and tolerability, up to a maximum of 2000 mg once daily. If glycemic control is not achieved on Glucophage Long 2000 mg once daily, consider a dose of 1000 mg twice daily with meals.

Storage:

Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
