Finasteride is a synthetic 4-azasteroid compound that is a specific inhibitor of type II 5α-reductase, an intracellular enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). By inhibiting this enzyme, finasteride decreases the levels of DHT, leading to a reduction in the size of the prostate gland and improvement in symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).Indications:
- Treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate
- Improvement of symptoms associated with BPH
- Reduction in the risk of acute urinary retention
- Reduction in the need for surgery including transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) and prostatectomy
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to finasteride or any of the excipients
- Use in women, especially during pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Use in children and adolescents
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Decreased libido, Erectile dysfunction, Decreased volume of ejaculate, Breast tenderness and enlargement, Rash, Pruritus, Urticaria, Testicular pain
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended dose is one 5 mg tablet taken once daily, with or without food. Treatment should be continued for at least 6 months to assess whether a beneficial response has been achieved.
Storage:
Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
