Indications:


  • Chronic myelogenous leukemia
  • Polycythemia vera
  • Essential thrombocythemia
  • Sickle cell anemia

Contraindications:


  • Hypersensitivity to hydroxyurea or any component of the formulation
  • Severe bone marrow suppression
  • Pregnancy and lactation

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Bone marrow suppression, Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Anorexia, Stomatitis, Rash, Hyperpigmentation, Headache, Dizziness

Dosing and Administration:


The recommended dose of Hydrea varies depending on the condition being treated. For chronic myelogenous leukemia, the typical starting dose is 20-30 mg/kg daily. For polycythemia vera and essential thrombocythemia, the dose is usually 15-20 mg/kg daily. For sickle cell anemia, the starting dose is 15 mg/kg daily. Dosage may be adjusted based on patient response and tolerance.
