Norvasc

Active substance:

Amlodipine besylate

Pharmachologic effect:

Norvasc is a calcium channel blocker that dilates blood vessels and improves blood flow. It is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and chest pain (angina).

Indications:

• Hypertension
• Chronic stable angina
• Vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal's or variant angina)

Contraindications:

• Severe hypotension
• Shock (including cardiogenic shock)
• Obstruction of the outflow tract of the left ventricle (e.g., high grade aortic stenosis)
• Hemodynamically unstable heart failure after acute myocardial infarction
• Known hypersensitivity to amlodipine or any component of the formulation

Side effects:

In order of decreasing probability: Very common: Edema, Common: Dizziness, flushing, headache, palpitations, abdominal pain, nausea, fatigue, Uncommon: Vomiting, dyspepsia, altered bowel habits, dry mouth, muscle cramps, joint swelling, sleep disturbances, increased urination frequency, Rare: Mood changes, confusion, visual disturbances, tinnitus, peripheral neuropathy, tremor, gingival hyperplasia, Very rare: Hepatitis, jaundice, hepatic enzymes increased, pancreatitis, gastritis, hyperglycemia

Dosing and Administration:

The usual initial antihypertensive oral dose of Norvasc is 5 mg once daily, and the dose may be increased to a maximum dose of 10 mg once daily depending on the individual patient's response. For angina, the recommended dose is 5–10 mg once daily.

Storage:

Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
