Pharmachologic effect:

Diuretic effect by inhibiting the Na+/K+/2Cl- carrier system in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, leading to increased excretion of sodium, chloride, and water.

Indications:


  • Edema associated with congestive heart failure
  • Edema associated with renal disease
  • Edema associated with hepatic disease
  • Hypertension

Contraindications:


  • Hypersensitivity to torasemide or sulfonylureas
  • Anuria
  • Hepatic coma
  • Severe hypokalemia
  • Severe hyponatremia

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Common: Electrolyte imbalance, headache, dizziness, Uncommon: Hypotension, fatigue, nausea, Rare: Rash, pruritus, tinnitus, Very rare: Anaphylactic reactions, severe skin reactions

Dosing and Administration:


The usual starting dose is 5 mg once daily. Depending on the patient's response, the dose may be increased to 10 mg once daily. In severe cases, the dose may be increased to 20 mg once daily.
