Isosorbide Mononitrate is a nitrate that dilates blood vessels, making it easier for blood to flow through them and easier for the heart to pump. It is primarily used to prevent angina attacks (chest pain).Indications:
- Prevention of angina pectoris
- Chronic heart failure management
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to isosorbide mononitrate or other nitrates
- Acute myocardial infarction
- Severe anemia
- Closed-angle glaucoma
- Severe hypotension
- Concomitant use with phosphodiesterase inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil)
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Headache, Dizziness, Nausea, Hypotension, Flushing, Palpitations, Fatigue
Dosing and Administration:
The usual starting dose is 20 mg taken twice daily. The dose may be increased to 40 mg twice daily if needed. Tablets should be taken with a glass of water, preferably in the morning and in the evening, with a 12-hour interval between doses to minimize the risk of tolerance.
