Lorista, containing the active ingredient Losartan, is primarily used for managing hypertension. By blocking certain substances, it helps relax blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more smoothly. This medication is effective in reducing the risk of strokes and heart attacks in individuals with cardiovascular concerns. Lorista is also beneficial for protecting the kidneys from damage due to diabetes. It is typically taken once a day, with or without food, depending on the user's preference. Adherence to the prescribed dosage is important to achieve optimal results. Regular monitoring of blood pressure is recommended to ensure the medication's effectiveness.

Pharmachologic effect:

Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist that works by blocking the action of angiotensin II, a substance in the body that causes blood vessels to tighten. As a result, losartan relaxes blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure and increases the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart.

Indications:


  • Hypertension
  • Heart failure
  • Reduction of stroke risk in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy
  • Diabetic nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes and a history of hypertension

Contraindications:


  • Hypersensitivity to losartan or any component of the drug
  • Pregnancy
  • Severe hepatic impairment
  • Concomitant use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Common: Dizziness, upper respiratory infection, nasal congestion, Less common: Fatigue, hypoglycemia, chest pain, Rare: Angioedema, hyperkalemia, renal impairment

Dosing and Administration:


The usual starting dose of Losartan is 50 mg once daily. The dose may be increased to 100 mg once daily as needed. For patients with possible intravascular volume depletion, a starting dose of 25 mg once daily should be considered. Dosage may be adjusted based on blood pressure response.

Storage:


Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
