
Losartan
Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used primarily to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). By blocking the action of angiotensin II, it helps relax blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily, thus lowering blood pressure. Losartan is also used to protect the kidneys from damage due to diabetes and to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with high blood pressure and an enlarged heart. It is typically taken once daily, with or without food. Consistent use of Losartan can contribute to improved cardiovascular health and reduced risk of future heart-related events. Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist that blocks the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II. It lowers blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump blood.Indications:
- Hypertension
- Reduction of the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy
- Treatment of diabetic nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes and hypertension
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to losartan or any component of the formulation
- Pregnancy
- Severe hepatic impairment
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Dizziness, Back pain, Upper respiratory infection, Nasal congestion, Fatigue, Hypotension, Hyperkalemia
Dosing and Administration:
The usual starting dose of losartan is 50 mg once daily. The dose may be increased to 100 mg once daily based on blood pressure response. It can be administered with or without food.
