Valsacor

Valsacor contains the active ingredient Valsartan, which is used primarily for the treatment of hypertension. It works by blocking the angiotensin II receptor, leading to the relaxation of blood vessels and subsequently lowering blood pressure. Valsartan is also beneficial in improving heart function in patients with heart failure and can be used post-myocardial infarction. The medication is typically administered in tablet form and is effective in reducing the risks associated with high blood pressure, such as strokes and heart attacks. Valsacor is part of the angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) class, offering a reliable option for cardiovascular health.

Pharmachologic effect:

Valsartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist that selectively blocks the AT1 receptor, which is responsible for the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II. This results in vasodilation and a reduction in blood pressure.

Indications:


  • Hypertension
  • Heart failure
  • Post-myocardial infarction

Contraindications:


  • Hypersensitivity to valsartan or any of the excipients
  • Severe hepatic impairment
  • Pregnancy
  • Concomitant use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes mellitus or renal impairment

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Dizziness, Hypotension, Hyperkalemia, Renal impairment, Fatigue, Headache, Cough

Dosing and Administration:


The recommended starting dose of Valsakor for most patients with hypertension is 80 mg once daily. The dose may be increased to a maximum of 320 mg daily, depending on the patient's response. For heart failure, the usual starting dose is 40 mg twice daily, which may be titrated to 160 mg twice daily. Post-myocardial infarction, the initial dose is 20 mg twice daily, with titration to 160 mg twice daily as tolerated.
