Itraconazole is an antifungal medication that works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes, thereby disrupting cell membrane formation and leading to fungal cell death.Indications:
- Treatment of systemic mycoses
- Onychomycosis caused by dermatophytes and/or yeasts
- Vulvovaginal candidiasis
- Pityriasis versicolor
- Dermatophytosis
- Oral and esophageal candidiasis
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to itraconazole or any of the excipients
- Pregnancy and lactation
- Concomitant use with certain medications such as cisapride, pimozide, quinidine, dofetilide, and others that may lead to QT prolongation
- Patients with ventricular dysfunction or a history of congestive heart failure
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Common: Nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, diarrhea, Uncommon: Headache, dizziness, fatigue, Rare: Hepatotoxicity, severe allergic reactions, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, peripheral neuropathy
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended dose for adults is 200 mg once daily. In severe infections, the dose may be increased to 200 mg twice daily. The capsules should be taken immediately after a full meal to ensure maximum absorption. Duration of treatment depends on the fungal infection being treated.
