Levetiracetam is an antiepileptic drug that affects the transmission of nerve signals in the brain, helping to reduce the frequency of seizures.Indications:
- Partial onset seizures with or without secondary generalization in adults and children from 4 years of age with epilepsy.
- Myoclonic seizures in adults and adolescents from 12 years of age with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy.
- Primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in adults and children from 6 years of age with idiopathic generalized epilepsy.
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to levetiracetam or any of the excipients.
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Very common: somnolence, asthenia., Common: dizziness, headache, insomnia, irritability., Uncommon: depression, anxiety, weight gain., Rare: thrombocytopenia, liver function test abnormal.
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended starting dose is 500 mg twice daily. Depending on the clinical response and tolerability, the dose can be increased by 500 mg twice daily every two weeks to a maximum dose of 1500 mg twice daily.
