Pharmachologic effect:

Indications:

Treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to alendronic acid or any component of the formulation
Esophageal abnormalities which delay esophageal emptying such as stricture or achalasia
Inability to stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes
Hypocalcemia

Side effects:

In order of decreasing probability: Common: Abdominal pain, dyspepsia, acid regurgitation, Uncommon: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, Rare: Esophageal ulceration, osteonecrosis of the jaw, atypical femoral fractures

Dosing and Administration:

The recommended dose is one 70 mg tablet once weekly. The tablet should be taken with a full glass of water at least 30 minutes before the first food, beverage, or medication of the day. Patients should remain upright for at least 30 minutes after taking the tablet.
