Pharmachologic effect:

Levofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that belongs to the fluoroquinolone class. It works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes necessary for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death.

Indications:

Contraindications:


  • Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin or other quinolones

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Nausea, Diarrhea, Headache, Dizziness, Insomnia, Constipation, Rash, Abdominal pain, Tendonitis, Photosensitivity

The usual dose for adults is 500 mg once or twice daily, depending on the severity and type of infection. The duration of treatment varies from 5 to 14 days. Tablets should be taken with water, with or without food.
