Losartan-AKOS is a medication formulated to manage high blood pressure, helping to prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. It belongs to a class of drugs known as angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), which work by relaxing blood vessels for smoother blood flow. This leads to a reduction in blood pressure and lowers the strain on the heart. Losartan-AKOS is generally taken once daily, and it may be used in conjunction with other antihypertensive agents. Regular use as prescribed can contribute to long-term cardiovascular health and kidney protection, especially in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Pharmachologic effect:

Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist that reduces blood pressure by blocking the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II.

Indications:


  • Hypertension
  • Heart failure
  • Reduction of stroke risk in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy
  • Diabetic nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes and a history of hypertension

Contraindications:


  • Hypersensitivity to losartan or any component of the formulation
  • Pregnancy
  • Severe hepatic impairment
  • Concomitant use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Dizziness, Upper respiratory infection, Nasal congestion, Back pain, Fatigue, Hypotension, Hyperkalemia, Renal impairment

Dosing and Administration:


The usual starting dose is 50 mg once daily. The dosage may be adjusted based on blood pressure response, with a typical range of 25 mg to 100 mg per day, administered in one or two divided doses.

Storage:


Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
