Atorvastatin
Atorvastatin is a statin medication primarily prescribed to lower cholesterol levels in the blood. By inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, Atorvastatin effectively reduces low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, often referred to as 'bad' cholesterol. This action helps in preventing cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes. Atorvastatin tablets are typically recommended as a part of a comprehensive treatment plan, including diet and exercise, to achieve optimal lipid levels. It is suitable for both adults and children over the age of 10. Regular monitoring of cholesterol levels is advised to gauge the medication's effectiveness.Active substance:
AtorvastatinPharmachologic effect:
Atorvastatin is a lipid-lowering agent that works by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme involved in the production of cholesterol in the liver. This results in decreased levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and triglycerides, while increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.Indications:
- Hypercholesterolemia
- Mixed dyslipidemia
- Prevention of cardiovascular disease
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to atorvastatin or any component of the formulation
- Active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of serum transaminases
- Pregnancy
- Lactation
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Common: Headache, nasopharyngitis, arthralgia, diarrhea, Uncommon: Myalgia, insomnia, dizziness, nausea, Rare: Rhabdomyolysis, liver enzyme abnormalities, hypersensitivity reactions
