Pharmachologic effect:

Moxonidine is an antihypertensive agent that acts as a selective agonist of the imidazoline receptor subtype 1 (I1). It reduces peripheral vascular resistance and lowers blood pressure by decreasing sympathetic nervous system activity.

Indications:


  • Essential hypertension

Contraindications:


  • Severe renal impairment
  • Severe hepatic impairment
  • Bradycardia
  • Heart failure
  • History of angioedema
  • Hypersensitivity to moxonidine or any of the excipients

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Dry mouth, Dizziness, Fatigue, Headache, Nausea, Insomnia, Rash, Pruritus, Hypotension

Dosing and Administration:


The recommended starting dose is 0.2 mg once daily. If necessary, the dose may be increased to 0.4 mg per day, given as a single dose or in two divided doses. The maximum daily dose is 0.6 mg, divided into two doses.

Storage:


Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
