Neurontin (Gabapentin) is an anticonvulsant medication that affects chemicals and nerves in the body that are involved in the cause of seizures and some types of pain.Indications:
- Management of postherpetic neuralgia in adults
- Adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial seizures with and without secondary generalization in adults and pediatric patients 3 years and older with epilepsy
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to gabapentin or any of the components of the formulation
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Dizziness, Somnolence, Peripheral edema, Ataxia, Fatigue, Nystagmus, Tremor, Diplopia, Infection, Asthenia
Dosing and Administration:
For adults with postherpetic neuralgia, the starting dose is 300 mg on Day 1, 600 mg on Day 2 (300 mg twice a day), and 900 mg on Day 3 (300 mg three times a day). The dose can be titrated up to 1800 mg/day (600 mg three times a day) based on efficacy and tolerability. For epilepsy, the effective dose is 900 to 1800 mg/day, administered in three divided doses.
