Pharmachologic effect:

Rimantadine is an antiviral medication that inhibits the replication of influenza A virus by blocking the viral M2 protein, which is essential for the viral life cycle.

Indications:


  • Prevention and treatment of influenza A in adults and children.

Contraindications:


  • Hypersensitivity to rimantadine or any component of the formulation
  • Severe liver dysfunction
  • Severe renal impairment
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Nausea, Vomiting, Loss of appetite, Dry mouth, Dizziness, Headache, Insomnia, Nervousness, Fatigue

Dosing and Administration:


For adults, the recommended dose is 100 mg twice daily. For children aged 10 years and older, the dose is 100 mg twice daily. For children aged 1 to 9 years, the dose is 5 mg/kg once daily, not exceeding 150 mg per day. Treatment should begin within 24 to 48 hours of the onset of symptoms and continue for 5 to 7 days.
