Pharmachologic effect:

Acyclovir is an antiviral medication that works by inhibiting the replication of herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It interferes with viral DNA synthesis, thereby reducing the severity and duration of outbreaks.

Indications:


  • Treatment of herpes simplex virus infections
  • Suppression of recurrent herpes simplex infections in immunocompetent individuals
  • Prophylaxis of herpes simplex infections in immunocompromised patients
  • Treatment of varicella (chickenpox)
  • Treatment of herpes zoster (shingles)

Contraindications:


  • Hypersensitivity to acyclovir or valacyclovir
  • Severe renal impairment without appropriate dose adjustment

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Nausea, Diarrhea, Headache, Dizziness, Fatigue, Abdominal pain, Rash, Itching, Vomiting, Fever

Dosing and Administration:


For the treatment of herpes simplex infections, the recommended dose is 200 mg every 4 hours, five times a day for 5 days. For the suppression of recurrent herpes simplex, 400 mg twice daily is recommended. For the treatment of varicella, 800 mg four times daily for 5 days is recommended. Dosage may need adjustment in patients with renal impairment.
