Pharmachologic effect:

Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, thereby stopping the growth of bacteria. It is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Indications:


  • Treatment of respiratory tract infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Helicobacter pylori eradication to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence
  • Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • Community-acquired pneumonia
  • Sinusitis
  • Pharyngitis

Contraindications:


  • Hypersensitivity to clarithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics
  • History of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with prior use of clarithromycin
  • Concomitant use with drugs that are substrates of CYP3A4 and have a narrow therapeutic window
  • Severe renal impairment

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Nausea, Diarrhea, Abdominal pain, Dyspepsia, Headache, Taste perversion, Liver enzyme abnormalities, Rash, Insomnia, Dizziness

Dosing and Administration:


The usual recommended dose for adults is 250 mg to 500 mg every 12 hours for 7 to 14 days, depending on the infection being treated. For Helicobacter pylori eradication, the dose is 500 mg twice daily in combination with other medications as prescribed by a healthcare provider.

Storage:


Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
