Co-trimoxazol

Active substance:

Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim

Pharmachologic effect:

Co-trimoxazole is a combination antibiotic that works by inhibiting the production of folic acid in bacteria, which is essential for their growth and replication. This dual action enhances the antibacterial effect and reduces the likelihood of resistance development.

Indications:

• Urinary tract infections
• Respiratory tract infections
• Gastrointestinal infections
• Skin and soft tissue infections
• Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, or any other component of the drug
• Severe liver or kidney impairment
• Megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding
• Infants under 2 months of age

Side effects:

In order of decreasing probability: Nausea, Vomiting, Rash, Diarrhea, Loss of appetite, Headache, Dizziness, Photosensitivity, Allergic reactions, Blood disorders

Dosing and Administration:

The usual adult dosage is 800 mg sulfamethoxazole and 160 mg trimethoprim every 12 hours. For children, the dosage is based on body weight and should be determined by a healthcare provider. The tablets should be taken with a full glass of water and can be taken with or without food.

Storage:

Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
