Metformin hydrochloride

Pharmachologic effect:

Formetin is an oral antihyperglycemic drug in the biguanide class, which helps to control blood sugar levels. It works by decreasing hepatic glucose production, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization.

Indications:

• Type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in overweight patients, when dietary management and exercise alone do not result in adequate glycemic control.

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to metformin or any of the excipients
• Acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis
• Severe renal impairment
• Acute conditions with the potential to alter renal function
• Severe hepatic insufficiency
• Chronic alcohol abuse or acute alcohol intoxication

Side effects:

In order of decreasing probability: Very common: Gastrointestinal disorders such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite, Common: Taste disturbance, Uncommon: Skin reactions such as erythema, pruritus, and urticaria, Rare: Lactic acidosis, Very rare: Decrease in vitamin B12 absorption

Dosing and Administration:

The usual starting dose is 500 mg or 850 mg once daily, given during or after meals. The dose may be increased gradually to minimize gastrointestinal side effects. The maximum recommended dose is 2000 mg per day, divided into 2-3 doses.

Storage:

Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
