Pradaxa

Pradaxa, containing the active ingredient Dabigatran etexilate, is an oral anticoagulant used to prevent the formation of blood clots. It is commonly prescribed for patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation to reduce the risk of stroke. Pradaxa works by inhibiting thrombin, a key enzyme in the blood clotting process, thus preventing clot formation. The medication is available in capsule form, providing ease of administration. Pradaxa is a convenient option for long-term anticoagulation therapy. It is important to adhere to the prescribed dosage schedule to ensure optimal efficacy. Pharmachologic effect:

Pradaxa is an anticoagulant that works by inhibiting thrombin, a key enzyme in the blood coagulation process, thereby preventing the formation of blood clots.

Indications:


  • Prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation
  • Treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE)
  • Prevention of recurrent DVT and PE
  • Prevention of venous thromboembolic events in patients who have undergone elective total hip or knee replacement surgery

Contraindications:


  • Severe renal impairment
  • Active clinically significant bleeding
  • Lesions or conditions at significant risk of major bleeding
  • Concomitant treatment with other anticoagulants
  • Hypersensitivity to dabigatran or any of the excipients

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Bleeding, Gastrointestinal discomfort, Nausea, Diarrhea, Abdominal pain, Anemia, Elevated liver enzymes, Allergic reactions

Dosing and Administration:


The recommended dose of Pradaxa is 150 mg taken orally twice daily. For certain patients, such as those with moderate renal impairment or those aged 75 years or older, a dose adjustment to 110 mg twice daily may be considered. Pradaxa can be taken with or without food.

Storage:


Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
