Pharmachologic effect:

Chlorprothixene is an antipsychotic medication belonging to the class of thioxanthenes. It works by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain, which helps to reduce symptoms of psychosis such as hallucinations and delusions. It also has sedative and anxiolytic effects, making it useful in treating anxiety and agitation.

Indications:

• Schizophrenia
• Psychotic disorders
• Severe anxiety
• Agitation in psychotic disorders

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to chlorprothixene or any of the excipients
• Coma or severe central nervous system depression
• Bone marrow suppression
• Pheochromocytoma

Side effects:

In order of decreasing probability: Drowsiness, Dry mouth, Constipation, Blurred vision, Weight gain, Dizziness, Orthostatic hypotension, Tachycardia, Extrapyramidal symptoms, Tardive dyskinesia

Dosing and Administration:

The dosage of Chlorprothixene should be individualized according to the patient's needs and response. For adults, the usual starting dose is 50-100 mg per day, divided into 2-3 doses. The dose may be gradually increased to 200-300 mg per day if needed. In severe cases, doses up to 600 mg per day may be used. The maintenance dose is usually lower and should be adjusted to the minimum effective dose.

Storage:

Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
