Pharmachologic effect:

Siofor Long is an oral antihyperglycemic drug used to manage blood glucose levels. It works primarily by decreasing hepatic glucose production, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization.

Indications:

• Type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in overweight patients, when dietary management and exercise alone do not result in adequate glycemic control.

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to metformin or any of the excipients
• Acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis, with or without coma
• Severe renal impairment
• Acute conditions with the potential to alter renal function such as dehydration, severe infection, shock
• Acute or chronic disease which may cause tissue hypoxia such as cardiac or respiratory failure, recent myocardial infarction, shock
• Hepatic insufficiency
• Alcoholism

Side effects:

In order of decreasing probability: Very common: Gastrointestinal disorders such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite, Common: Taste disturbance, Uncommon: Skin reactions such as erythema, pruritus, urticaria, Rare: Lactic acidosis, Vitamin B12 deficiency

Dosing and Administration:

The recommended starting dose of Siofor Long is 500 mg once daily with the evening meal. Dosage should be adjusted based on blood glucose measurements, and the maximum recommended dose is 2000 mg once daily with the evening meal.

Storage:

Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
