Pariet contains Rabeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor used to reduce stomach acid production. It is primarily prescribed for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Rabeprazole works by blocking the proton pumps in the stomach lining, providing relief from symptoms like heartburn and acid indigestion. This medication is available in tablet form and is typically taken once daily. It helps promote healing of esophageal damage due to acid. Pariet is also used to support the eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection in combination with antibiotics. Always follow the prescribed dosage and schedule for optimal results.

Pharmachologic effect:

Pariet is a proton pump inhibitor that suppresses gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the gastric H+/K+ ATPase at the secretory surface of the gastric parietal cell. It blocks the final step of acid production, reducing gastric acidity.

Indications:


  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Duodenal ulcers
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
  • Erosive esophagitis
  • Maintenance of healing of erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease

Contraindications:


  • Hypersensitivity to rabeprazole or any component of the formulation
  • Pregnancy and lactation
  • Severe liver impairment

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Headache, Diarrhea, Nausea, Abdominal pain, Flatulence, Constipation, Dizziness, Rash

Dosing and Administration:


The recommended dose of Pariet for the treatment of GERD and duodenal ulcers is 20 mg once daily. For Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, the initial dose is 60 mg once daily, adjusted as needed. The tablets should be swallowed whole with water and can be taken with or without food.

Storage:


Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
