Sumatriptan is a selective serotonin receptor agonist that works by narrowing blood vessels around the brain and reducing substances in the body that can trigger headache pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and other migraine symptoms.Indications:
- Acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura.
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to sumatriptan or any of the excipients
- History of myocardial infarction
- Coronary artery disease or vasospasm
- Peripheral vascular disease
- Stroke or transient ischemic attack
- Severe hepatic impairment
- Uncontrolled hypertension
- Concurrent use with MAO inhibitors or within 2 weeks of discontinuation
- Concurrent use with other 5-HT1 receptor agonists or ergotamine-containing medications
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Dizziness, Drowsiness, Tingling or numbness, Flushing, Weakness, Nausea, Vomiting, Chest discomfort, Fatigue, Increased blood pressure
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended dose for adults is a single 50 mg tablet taken orally with water. If the migraine persists or returns, a second dose may be taken at least 2 hours after the first dose. The maximum dose in 24 hours should not exceed 200 mg.
Storage:
Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
