Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist that works by blocking the action of a substance in the body that causes blood vessels to tighten. As a result, telmisartan relaxes blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow.Indications:
- Hypertension
- Cardiovascular risk reduction in patients unable to take ACE inhibitors
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to telmisartan or any component of the formulation
- Second and third trimester of pregnancy
- Biliary obstructive disorders
- Severe hepatic impairment
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Dizziness, Back pain, Sinusitis, Diarrhea, Upper respiratory tract infection, Fatigue, Hypotension, Hyperkalemia
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended dose of telmisartan is 40 mg once daily. Some patients may benefit from a dose of 20 mg once daily. If additional blood pressure reduction is required, the dose of telmisartan may be increased to a maximum of 80 mg once daily.
