Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist that works by blocking the action of angiotensin II, a substance in the body that causes blood vessels to tighten. As a result, losartan relaxes blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure and increases the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart.Indications:
- Hypertension
- Reduction of the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy
- Treatment of diabetic nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes and a history of hypertension
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to losartan or any component of the formulation
- Pregnancy
- Severe hepatic impairment
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Dizziness, Upper respiratory infection, Nasal congestion, Back pain, Fatigue, Hypotension, Hyperkalemia
Dosing and Administration:
The usual starting dose of Losartan is 50 mg once daily. The dose may be increased to 100 mg once daily based on blood pressure response. For patients with possible intravascular volume depletion (e.g., those treated with diuretics), a starting dose of 25 mg once daily should be considered.
