Torasemide is a loop diuretic that inhibits the Na+/K+/2Cl- carrier system in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, leading to increased excretion of sodium, chloride, and water. This results in a reduction of fluid overload and blood pressure.Indications:
- Edema associated with congestive heart failure
- Edema associated with renal disease
- Edema associated with hepatic disease
- Hypertension
Contraindications:
- Anuria
- Severe hypokalemia
- Severe hyponatremia
- Hypersensitivity to torasemide or sulfonylureas
- Hepatic coma
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Hypokalemia, Dizziness, Headache, Fatigue, Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Constipation, Hypotension, Hyperglycemia
Dosing and Administration:
For edema, the initial recommended dose is 5 mg once daily, which may be increased to 20 mg once daily if needed. For hypertension, the usual dose is 2.5 mg to 5 mg once daily. The dose should be adjusted according to the patient's response and clinical condition.
