Torasemide is a loop diuretic that inhibits the Na+/K+/2Cl- carrier system in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, leading to increased excretion of sodium, chloride, and water. It is used to reduce fluid retention and swelling caused by heart failure, kidney disease, or liver disease.Indications:
- Edema associated with congestive heart failure
- Edema associated with renal disease
- Edema associated with hepatic disease
- Hypertension
Contraindications:
- Anuria
- Hepatic coma
- Severe electrolyte imbalance
- Hypersensitivity to torasemide or sulfonylureas
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Common: Hypokalemia, headache, dizziness, Uncommon: Hypotension, dehydration, muscle cramps, Rare: Thrombocytopenia, tinnitus, rash
Dosing and Administration:
For edema, the usual starting dose is 5 mg once daily, which may be increased to 20 mg once daily if needed. For hypertension, the usual dose is 2.5 mg once daily. The dose may be adjusted based on the patient's response and clinical condition.
