Torasemide is a loop diuretic that inhibits the Na+/K+/2Cl- carrier system in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, leading to increased excretion of sodium, chloride, and water. This results in a reduction of fluid overload and blood pressure.Indications:
- Edema associated with congestive heart failure
- Edema associated with renal disease
- Edema associated with hepatic disease
- Hypertension
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to torasemide or sulfonylureas
- Anuria
- Hepatic coma
- Severe electrolyte imbalance
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Hypokalemia, Dizziness, Headache, Nausea, Fatigue, Hypotension, Hyperglycemia, Hyperuricemia
Dosing and Administration:
For edema, the typical starting dose is 5 mg once daily, which may be increased to 20 mg once daily if needed. For hypertension, the usual dose is 2.5 mg once daily. Dosage may be adjusted based on patient response and clinical condition.
