Valsartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that selectively inhibits the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor, which is found in many tissues such as vascular smooth muscle and the adrenal gland. This inhibition results in vasodilation, reduced secretion of vasopressin, and decreased production and secretion of aldosterone, leading to a reduction in blood pressure.Indications:

Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to valsartan or any of the excipients
- Severe hepatic impairment
- Pregnancy
- Concomitant use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes mellitus or renal impairment
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Headache, Dizziness, Fatigue, Abdominal pain, Cough, Diarrhea, Hyperkalemia, Hypotension, Renal impairment
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended starting dose of Valsartan for hypertension is 80 mg once daily. The dose may be increased to a maximum of 320 mg once daily, depending on the patient's response. For heart failure, the starting dose is 40 mg twice daily, which may be titrated to 160 mg twice daily. Post-myocardial infarction, the initial dose is 20 mg twice daily, which can be increased to 160 mg twice daily as tolerated.
