Carvedilol-Vertex tablets are primarily used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. As a non-selective beta-blocker, Carvedilol works by relaxing blood vessels and slowing heart rate to improve blood flow and decrease blood pressure. This medication is effective in reducing the risk of stroke and heart attack. Carvedilol is often prescribed to improve survival after a heart attack and to manage chronic heart failure. The tablets are typically taken twice daily and can be used alone or in combination with other medications. Carvedilol is a non-selective beta-blocker with alpha-1 blocking activity. It reduces cardiac output, decreases peripheral vascular resistance, and lowers blood pressure. It also has antioxidant properties.Indications:
- Hypertension
- Chronic heart failure
- Left ventricular dysfunction following myocardial infarction
- Angina pectoris
Contraindications:
- Severe chronic heart failure requiring intravenous inotropic therapy
- Bronchial asthma or related bronchospastic conditions
- Second or third-degree AV block
- Severe bradycardia
- Cardiogenic shock
- Severe hepatic impairment
- Hypersensitivity to carvedilol or any component of the formulation
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Dizziness, Fatigue, Hypotension, Diarrhea, Bradycardia, Hyperglycemia, Weight gain, Visual disturbances, Nausea
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended starting dose for hypertension is 6.25 mg twice daily, which may be increased after 7-14 days to 12.5 mg twice daily. For chronic heart failure, the starting dose is 3.125 mg twice daily, which can be doubled every two weeks to the highest dose tolerated by the patient. The maximum recommended dose is 25 mg twice daily for patients weighing less than 85 kg and 50 mg twice daily for patients weighing more than 85 kg.
