Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist that lowers blood pressure by blocking the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II. It helps to relax blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump blood.Indications:
- Hypertension
- Reduction of the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy
- Treatment of diabetic nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes and a history of hypertension
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to losartan or any component of the formulation
- Pregnancy
- Severe hepatic impairment
- Concomitant use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Dizziness, Back pain, Upper respiratory infection, Nasal congestion, Fatigue, Hypotension, Hyperkalemia
Dosing and Administration:
The usual starting dose is 50 mg once daily. The dose may be increased to 100 mg once daily based on blood pressure response. In patients with possible intravascular volume depletion, a starting dose of 25 mg once daily should be considered.
Storage:
Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
